Joshua
This sixth book of the Old Testament tells the story of the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, the prophet called upon to succees Moses.
We find the Israelites camped on the east side of the Jordan River, preparing to cross over into Canaan. Joshua, who was previously Moses' right hand man, is then appointed by God to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.
Crossing of the River Jordan River is the first major event narrated in the text. And just as God once casued the Red Sea to part allowing the Israelites to cross over on dry ground, se God now causes the river to stop flowing. Once safely on the other side, Joshua sends two spies to scout out the city of Jericho, which is the first city they will have to conquer. The spies are helped by 'Rahab the Harlot' and a Canaanite to boot! She it is who hides them from the city's authorities and helps them escape. In return, they promise to spare her and her family when they attack the city.
Joshua and his army then surround the city and famously march around it for seven days. On the seventh day, they blow their trumpets and the walls of the city crumble, allowing them to enter and defeat the city. The Israelites move on unrelentingly, to conquer other cities in Canaan, including Ai, which they initially fail to conquer due to disobedience, but ultimately do so by tricking their enemies.
As the Israelites continue to conquer the land and Joshua divides it among the twelve tribes of Israel. He also sets up cities of refuge for those who accidentally kill someone, where they can go to avoid being killed by the victim's family in revenge. The book ends with Joshua reminding the Israelites of all that God has done for them and urging them to remain faithful to Him. Joshua then dies at the age of 110 and is buried in the land that he conquered.
