Deuteronomy

The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible (and the last of the Pentateuch). It consists a series of speeches delivered by Moses to the Israelites on the plains of Moab, just before they enter the Promised Land over the river Jordan. The speeches are a recapitulation of the Israelites' history, law, and covenant with God. (In relation to this route, set out in this website it is wonderful to sit outside the Yorkshire Museum and to look over the River Ouse imagining it to be the river Jordan).

Deuteronomy begins with Moses explaining to the Israelites their plight. Those who have been wandering in the wilderness for forty years since their escape from Egypt. He recounts their journey from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea, and their failure to enter the Promised Land due to their lack of faith. He then reminds them of their victories over the Amorites and the Bashanites, and the divine allocation of land to the east of the Jordan.

Moses then proceeds to give a series of sermons in which he reiterates the law and covenant that God has made with the Israelites. He emphasizes the importance of obedience to God's commandments, and warns against the consequences of disobedience. He exhorts the people to love and serve God with all their heart, soul, and strength, and to pass on the law to their children.

Moses also sets out the terms of the covenant that God has made with the Israelites. He reminds them of their obligations to God, which include keeping his commandments, worshipping him alone, and following his ways. In return, God promises to bless the Israelites with prosperity, victory over their enemies, and the enjoyment of the land of Canaan.

The book of Deuteronomy also contains a series of laws and regulations governing various aspects of Israelite life, such as worship, sacrifice, and justice. Moses explains the significance of these laws and emphasizes the importance of following them. He warns against idolatry, sorcery, and other practices that are abhorrent to God.

In addition, Moses appoints Joshua as his successor and instructs him to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. He also sets aside cities of refuge for those who have accidentally killed someone, and warns against false witnesses and false prophets.

The book of Deuteronomy concludes with Moses' death and the appointment of Joshua as the new leader of the Israelites. Moses is buried on Mount Nebo, and the book ends with a description of his greatness and the love that the Israelites had for him.

Overall, the book of Deuteronomy serves as a reminder of God's covenant with the Israelites, and the importance of obeying his commandments. It emphasizes the centrality of God in Israelite life, and the need for the people to love and serve him with all their heart, soul, and strength. It also sets out the laws and regulations that govern Israelite life, and warns of the consequences of disobedience. The book concludes with the passing of Moses, the appointment of Joshua as his successor, and the anticipation of the Israelites' entry into the Promised Land.
